My most recent paintings are abstract landscapes inspired by the mountains, rivers, and valleys of the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. They are mostly acrylic on either canvas or wood panel. The earlier "Suburi" paintings are oil and graphite on paper and occasionally incorporate inks of various kinds. I use a variety of abrasive techniques to achieve an etching-like quality to the surface that I then work over with thin glazes of oil paint. The markings are meant to suggest energy paths created during a form of meditation in martial arts called "suburi" that uses precisely executed movements of a sword through space to cleanse and sharpen the mind.
